Organizational transformational leaders apply various forms of power to facilitate change in their followers. The first one is referent power which is earned from the leader’s personal characteristics, traits and the ability to attract the respect of other people. Another type of power that is frequently present in transformational leaders is referent power because people look up to such leaders as examples (Fries et al., 2021). For instance, in a nursing work experience, a transformational leader may employ referent power to encourage their team to take care of patients compassionately by being a compassionate leader.

Another form of power that transformational leaders employ is expert power which stems from the leader’s specialization in certain field. Leaders of transformational leadership style are usually competent and experienced in their leadership roles thus people place their confidence in them (Al Amiri et al., 2021). In a nursing context, for example, a transformational leader could use expert power to help the team make decision that is crucial by relying on their experience and knowledge.

Lastly, transformational leaders sometimes use the inspirational power, which refers to the ability of the leader to influence and encourage followers with a vision for the future. These leaders are able to express a clear and persuasive vision that is aligned with the values and goals of the subordinates in order to motivate them towards the achievement of a shared goal (Fries et al., 2020). Transformational power in a nursing context, for instance, might be a call to support a vision of delivering the best patient care in order to encourage the employees to work harder in order to achieve the vision.
