Week 14 Discussion
Healthcare proxy is an important role in the health field. Proxies can vary from close family members to guardian to help make decision for patient when mentality incapacitated. Nurses are used as proxies in these patient directly and indirectly to help evaluate patients need. Often nurses use their sound judgment of the physical language portrays by patient to help understand the need of patient and brings a solution to that problem. Peplau was a great theorist who help identify the importance of interpersonal relationship of patient and nurse (Peterson 2020).
Peplau helped identify 7 roles of nursing intervention. These roles include stranger, resource, leader, teacher, counselor, technical expert and surrogate. The need to communicate with a child of special need is a collaboration of the role merge together to help manage the care medical. Home care is analyzed as the best environment for these patients with special need in care and which nurses plays a vital role in serving as a proxy. Nurses serve as proxy but most importantly as a surrogate with children of special need. Nurses serves as ear and mouth of these patients. Nurses role as proxy for such patients must be compassionate toward the care of these patient and not judge these patients but serve as source of solution by providing proper care and being supportive of their health conditions.
One particular disease in children that characterized with severe mental delay is Niemann pick disease. Mental delay varies in children with Niemann pick with mild to severe leading to language delay and difficulty of speaking. Children living with this disease have great difficulties and brings a limitation to their life. Their social life, career life and daily life is almost nonexistent. These patient life of care is directed toward the understanding of quality of care rather than social or environment (Knibo, 2019).
A study was conducted known as the NPCQLQ-C and NPCQLQ-A. They are questionnaires used to present the insight gained subjective experience on these patients. The study concluded that the study questionnaire was used to evaluate the real life impact of children with Nieman Pick disease daily life. These tools can help health care providers like nurses assess patient development, evaluation and new implementation or new intervention during clinical trials. These scales help nurses give voice to patient and promote dialogue between the patient and parents. It also provides communication to healthcare professionals to help bring meaningful care to these patients of special need (Knibo, 2019).
In conclusion, nurse can serve as proxy to children of special need who are unable to speak for themselves. Guidance is needed to help these children. One study was conducted and found that questionanares are a great way to help understand these patient and ultimate give voice for them to help promote better quality of life.
