Classmate Post:

Talking about how pandemic changed organizational cultures, we can say that it fundamentally affected organizations and their traditional ways of functioning. According to Muller et al. (2023), organizations that used non electronic methods of documentation were forced to adopt digitalized ways of cooperating and maintaining information flows during lockdowns. Many hospitals allowed health care workers to work remotely. Pandemic exposed systemic weaknesses in health care systems. It became clear for many organizations that many health care facilities were ill-equipped and unprepared to manage the influx of patients and had inadequate medical and epidemiological training to properly address patient care.

Studies conducted by University of Berkley revealed that COVID-19 pandemic led organizations to emphasize certain cultural elements and to downplay others. Cultural elements that were de-emphasized were individualism and results orientation. Organizations emphasized empathy, understanding, and mutual support.

There are pros to these changes. First, short-term changes regarding digital working methods have been adapted in the long term afterwards. Second, digitalization and ability to work remotely allowed health care workers to remain connected and engaged in the work process.  Third, organizational changes that occurred during the pandemic promoted openness toward innovation in the future.

Speaking about cons of the changes, Filip et al. (2022) notes that health care system still needs to be restructured so that organizations are better prepared to deal with outbreaks of new diseases that have overwhelmed the traditional hospital system and significantly reduced the quality of patient care.  Some medical professionals who work remotely report lack of social contact as something that needs to be changed.
